By the time Emilie had worked her styling magic on the four teenagers and two students, they were laughing and trading jokes and compliments about each otherâs improved looks. Alice did not have any interest in new makeup techniques. However, she did pay close attention when Emilie got out her fashion portfolio and discussed style with each girl. She assessed their body types and held up swatches of fabric to talk to them about what colors would be most pleasing for their skin tones. She also talked about mixing colors and textures to make an interesting fashion statement, tailoring her talk to the teens but adapting her advice a little for the more mature females.
âJeans and T-shirts are fine for around the house or gardening,â Emilie said to them all. âBut when you go out with your friends, you want a bit more sophistication. You can pair nice jeans with a dressier blouse and some appropriate jewelry. And for a college or job interview, you definitely want to look your bestâpolished. So no jeans allowed.â
âThanks for letting us sit in,â Glenna whispered to Alice. âJanette and I have been enjoying ourselves. Weâve been so busy working on our research that we havenât given much consideration to how we look.â
Janette overheard and nodded. âWeâll be entering the job market some day, but even before then, itâs good to know a few tricks about looking nice.â
âI learned a lot myself,â Alice said. âMy sister Jane sometimes encourages me to be a bit more stylish. I should listen to her more often.â
âYour teenage friends seem happy too.â Janette nodded at the four girls. They were fingering swatches of a silky material while Emilie held it up against wool swatches, presumably representing pants or a skirt.
Alice noticed that each of the girls seemed to sit a little straighter and hold her head a little more erect. Julieâs eyes positively glowed. Sabrina smiled as always, and Isidra chattered away to anyone who would listen. No matter how lovely her newly made-up face was, however, Esmeralda still refused to smile, though she watched Emilieâs every move with the fashion books.
